Start up and Shutdown tips

June 10, 2009 at 9:46 am (Uncategorized, Windows Tips and Tricks) (, )

Today morning i was trying to shutdown my Laptop (Windows XP installed on it) and surprisngly it was taking lot of time i did some tweaking to make sure system doesn’t take much time during start up and shut down.So Find some of the tips to get rid of slower start up and shutdown issues..

1.Importance of bootFile:- All the bootfiles present in promoximity makes system faster so Boot Defragmentation is required.By Default this option is enabled in you PC but noone knows if it is disabled.

Go to Run and type Regedit (to see Registry Editor) Now Navigate to following path to see the value of this flag.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction

attention-danger Many WebSites suggest to  go to your C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch directory and emptying it every weekWindows uses this directory to speed up launching applications. It analyzes the files you use during startup and the applications you launch, and it creates an index to where those files and applications are located on your hard disk. By using this index, XP can launch files and applications faster. So, by emptying the directory, you are most likely slowing down launching applications. In my tests, I’ve also found that after emptying the directory, it takes my PC a few seconds longer to get to my desktop after bootup

Speed Up Shutdown Times

It’s not only startup times that you’d like to speed up; you can also make sure that your system shuts down faster. If shutting down XP takes what seems to be an inordinate amount of time, here are a couple of steps you can take to speed up the shutdown process:

  • Don’t have XP clear your paging file at shutdown

For security reasons, you can have XP clear your paging file (pagefile.sys) of its contents whenever you shut down. Your paging file is used to store temporary files and data, but when your system shuts down, information stays in the file. Some people prefer to have the paging file cleared at shutdown because sensitive information, such as unencrypted passwords, sometimes ends up in the file. However, clearing the paging file can slow shutdown times significantly, so if extreme security isn’t a high priority, you might not want to clear it. To shut down XP without clearing your paging file, run the Registry Editor and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Change the value of ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 0. Close the Registry and restart your computer. Whenever you turn off XP from now on, the paging file won’t be cleared, and you should be able to shut down more quickly.

  • Turn off unnecessary services

Services take time to shut down, so the fewer you run, the faster you can shut down. For information on how to shut them down

Any body can guess which movie we are  talking about……Dear friend its none other that Star Trek Directed by J. J.Abrams.This movie is must watch movie for Year 2009.

I’ve never been a Trekker and yet I must confess I was amply entertained by the new Star Trek movie that’s opened at the cinemas this week. With a legacy of six television series and 10 feature films behind it, the cult following of Star Trek is virtually unparalleled in the sci-fi genre, with only George LucasStar Wars films posing any serious competition to Star Trek in the popularity department.

Rebooting the Star Trek saga in a way that it must appeal to both its loyal fan base of Trek faithfuls and a whole new generation of young, unfamiliar film-goers couldn’t have been an easy job – even Lucas more or less failed in achieving that with his less-than-spectacular Star Wars prequels – but director JJ Abrams does a pretty good job of it.

Good Thing about this movie : Let’s face it: Star Trek was getting tired, with diminishing box-office returns and falling TV ratings. By going back to the beginning and introducing a whole new youthful vibe past Treks never had, Abrams has given a new lease on life to a legendary 40-year-old adventure that now can go on to live long(er) and (fortunately for Paramount) prosper all over again. The updated casting is joined by state-of-the-art visual effects and action set pieces that outdo any previous incarnations, and the whip-smart screenplay by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman does creator Gene Roddenberry’s original vision proud while introducing it to a new generation. Key to successfully accomplishing this mission was to create a new take that would bring in new devotees but not turn off the faithful Trekkies who’ve kept this thing going for so long.

Bad Thing about this movie :-Other than Yelchin’s accent, only the overriding feeling that any potential sequels can never match the joy of seeing the genesis of Star Trek portrayed like it is here. But bring ‘em on anyway.

OverAll Rating: *** (Good)

*****  Excellent (Must Watch,Great piece of work).

**** Very Good (Must Watch ,would have been better).

*** Good  (Watchable to entertainment).

** Average (Don’t blame me if feel like cheated)

* Poor  (Why people make these kind of movies)
